The Lasting Benefits of Choir for Children… And Why Young Singers of the Palm Beaches Stands Out

YSPB for Notables, The Palm Beach Post
Young Singers of the Palm Beaches (YSPB) community children’s choir isn’t just another after-school activity. It’s a place where children discover their voice, build friendships, and develop skills that impact their academic success, mental health, and overall wellbeing.
For over 22 years, Young Singers of the Palm Beaches has helped thousands of children grow into confident, capable young people, using music as the foundation.

Research continues to show that singing has measurable benefits on a young person’s development. Participation in structured singing programs is linked to improved emotional and physical well-being, increased confidence, and stronger social connection among peers. In a choir setting, children learn so much more than just music. They learn how to listen, collaborate, and contribute to something bigger than themselves. Studies and program outcomes alike show that choir participation can:
  • Improve academic performance, particularly in reading and cognitive development
  • Build self-esteem, confidence, and emotional expression
  • Strengthen discipline, focus, and teamwork
  • Support stress management and promote positive emotions
  • Foster meaningful friendships and a strong sense of belonging

At Young Singers of the Palm Beaches, these benefits are intentionally woven into every rehearsal and performance. Serving students in grades 2–12, YSPB provides high-level choral training in a supportive environment.

With over 350 singers from public, private and home schools, the program reflects a vibrant community united by song. Rehearsals are at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach with additional access for grades 3–5 through its satellite choirs in North Palm Beach and Boynton Beach.

What truly sets YSPB apart is its standard of excellence. Singers perform in two mainstage concerts each season at the Kravis Center, in addition to community ensemble performances and collaborations with leading arts organizations. These experiences give young performers real-world stage experience and a deep sense of accomplishment.

The proof of YSPB’s impact and inspiration are professed by the many alumni who return annually to volunteer at fundraisers and backstage at concerts. Alumni living in our area work weekly at YSPB rehearsals, mentoring the next group of young singers. Devin Embrich, a YSPB alum who graduated from the choir in 2021, is a music teacher at Jupiter Middle School and the YSPB Conductor of the Men’s and Barbershop Choirs, the very same choirs he was a member of for four years!

The public is invited to experience YSPB’s excellence firsthand at their upcoming Spring Concert: American Mosaic, May 10, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. at the Kravis Center. Tickets are available at www.kravis.org.

For families considering choir, YSPB is welcoming new singers who are ready to grow, learn, and be part of something meaningful. Auditions will be held on June 6, 2026. Requirements and registration can be found at www.yspb.org/audition.

The Young Singers of the Palm Beaches is sponsored in part by the Board of County Commissioners, the Tourist Development Council, and the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County.
