On March 11, Young Singers of the Palm Beaches will hold their 10th annual 5K.
The YSPB Mary Murray Scholarship 5K benefits their scholarship fund, and is in memory of Mary Murray, the mother of the group’s managing director, Melanee Blankstein. Two of Mary Murray’s grandsons are alumni of the choir.
In the past, YSPB’s 5K has had 250-300 participants and about 50 volunteers. Replenishing the scholarship fund annually is vital, Young Singers says, because demand for financial assistance remains at 32% of the choir’s families.
YSPB singers and alumni will gather before the race to join in the national anthem, as a Girl Scout troop presents the flag. After the race, everyone will gather at the pavilion for their annual 5K tradition of a free pancake breakfast.
The 5K welcomes all ages and levels to participate by either running or walking.
All participants receive a free T-shirt and race day medal (while supplies last). Runners will be timed and can qualify for place medals in various age categories starting as young as 10 and under.
The festivities take place at the Micanopy Pavilion at Okeeheelee Park, on Forest Hill Boulevard in West Palm Beach. Check-in and registration start at 7 a.m.; warmups and prerace events start at 7:30 a.m. and the race starts at 8 a.m. The YSPB 5K is open to the public.
