Young Singers of the Palm Beaches is about to turn 20.
And the group’s impact echoes far.
Alumni have gone on to teach music in Palm Beach County, as well as become opera singers, performers, actors, entertainment executives, music therapists and become involved in other musicbased careers.
The organization says the life skills Young Singers taught its choir members also helped alumni to become doctors, lawyers, scientists, teachers, business owners and more.
“For our choir members it’s more than the experience of coming together and singing, it’s learning all of the other skills that go along with singing — it’s commitment, and confidence and learning to socialize with others and work as a team,” Shawn Berry, the choir’s artistic director and one of the founders, said in a statement.
The choir backs up some real stars, too.
“I would never have had these incredible life-changing opportunities without YSPB. I’ve performed on the Kravis stage more than 20 times and have participated in two operas. … I’ve performed with and for celebrities like Bernie Taupin, Michael Feinstein and Ethan Bortnick,” Tristin Butler, who was a 9-year member of Young Singers, said on his graduation from the group.

Young Singers of the Palm Beaches founders Michael Yannette, Connie Drosakis and Shawn Berry gathered recently.
Young Singers of the Palm Beaches began in 2003 to fill the need for music education in schools because of cuts in funding in the arts. The founders — Shawn Berry, Connie Drosakis, and Michael Yannette — were music educators and choral conductors who envisioned a children’s choral organization that would not be constrained by school boundaries, religious affiliations, racial bias, socio-economic barriers, or funding cuts to arts education.
Today, YSPB, as it is commonly known, has a regular enrollment of about 250 young members and is continually auditioning new singers.
Young Singers serves children and teens in grades 2 through 12. Singers are divided into different choirs based on grade level.
Young Singers produces two main concerts a season — both are full-scale productions presented on the main stage of the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. This year’s holiday concert – “20th Anniversary Season Winter Tapestry 2022” — will be Dec. 10 at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets go on sale Oct. 1.
The choir also has ensembles that perform in the community. This fall, Young Singers is scheduled to appear:
• Backup choir on two songs for “Floyd Nation: Experience Pink Floyd” at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.
• Featured choir for Palm Beach Symphony’s “Sounds of the Season” televised Holiday Concert on primetime TV.
• Featured choir at Palm Beach Roundtable’s holiday event in support of autism.
• Holiday entertainment at both the city of Boynton Beach and the town of Lake Clarke Shores Christmas Tree Lighting events.
Young Singers also plans to form a new South County Choir. Thanks to funding from Impact 100 Palm Beach County, Young Singers will be offering its choral program to families in the southernmost part of the county. The new South County Choir will begin rehearsing in September at the Boynton Beach Arts and Cultural Center and will serve children in grades 2-8. Info:
