Erica Barnes conducts our youngest singers in grades 2 and 3 in the Da Capo choir, which, in music, means from the beginning. She also co-conducts the Bel Canto and Encore middle school choirs with Ms. Leahy.
A graduate of Dreyfoos School of the Arts and Florida State University, Erica Barnes was the director of choral activities at Independence Middle School from 2002-2009 where she grew the brand new program from 90 to over 250 singers. In addition to being a conductor, she also holds the position of Assistant to Artistic Director, Shawn Berry, and works in the office with YSPB staff helping to create and expand its programming. She has taught private voice instruction, after school chorus at Beacon Cove Elementary, children’s music at Jupiter First Church, and has been the summer music conservatory senior division choral director for First Presbyterian Church since 2009. Last year she directed the children’s chorus for, and performed in, Jupiter First Church’s musical adaptation of Godspell. Mrs. Barnes was also the teaching artist for the Young Singer’s 3-year grant project “Building Learning Communities through Arts and Culture,” and has also been a former student of Ms. Drosakis and completed her college internship with Mr. Berry at Bak MSOA.
This season Mrs. Barnes had the honor of leading the Encore choir in several community performances for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, The Hanley Center, Beau Biden Foundation, Children’s Home Society, Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce and the City of Palm Beach Gardens. She is grateful to be able to help Young Singers provide children with opportunities to share their gifts and talents throughout our community while teaching the importance of giving back.
Mrs. Barnes is extremely proud of her daughter, Aubrey, who has been a Young Singer for several years and will attend Dreyfoos School of the Arts next year. She is equally proud of her son, Danny, who is an amazing ice hockey goalie for the Palm Beach Hawks.
