Young Singers Prime Time Program Excels Both Online and In Person

P. Zaros, YSPB
Our Palm Beach County music teachers quickly made the switch in March 2020 to virtual teaching, keeping the music instruction and singing going... and now they are amazing us both virtually and in person!
The amazing teachers and conductors that have provided so many countless hours of dedication to the children of Palm Beach County are to be commended! We especially thank those involved in our Prime Time program... they made the switch in March to virtual teaching, kept the music instruction and the singing going all through the summer, and have amazed us all this fall teaching both in person and online.

We would like to take a moment to share with you some of the lovely things that our Prime Time conductors accomplished with their choirs.

We are so thankful to Prime Time Palm Beach County and the Children's Services Council of Palm Beach for giving us the funding to produce and conduct these amazing choirs, which enrich and educate so many children each year! If you are interested in learning more about our Prime Time choirs, please see the Prime Time PBC tab under "Choral Programs" on our website or email Lucy@yspb.org.

Bravo to Mrs. Braunstein and the Egret Lake Virtual Chorus for creating this video based on a song by The Beatles. This was the first video they produced: “A Little Help From My Friends,” complete with art integration. Please enjoy this precious gift to us all. The son of Ms. Braunstein, a NYC teacher, edited this charming message for our times. (Video can be viewed on our YouTube Channel)

Mr. Rhymes instructs a unique choir, with students attending from home, the afterschool classroom and even from a remote Boys & Girls Club aftercare. This collaboration allows extension of work beyond our traditional classrooms.

Mr. Rhymes enriches choir members with a learning unit called, “Be Yourself and Sing.” This lively multimedia format is a champion with student leaders, group planning, and musical theatre. Youth are encouraged to express themselves, sing out, and always “Save the Scene.” The unit has great class emojis progressing youth through warm-up, solfege, tongue twisters, song, choreography and spoken word.

The students at Washington Elementary are happily receiving music education in-person, safely working on rhythm through “cup” percussion numbers. Ms. Wilson at Washington Elementary provided mask face brackets to her in-person singers and music students making singing easier while wearing a mask.

Ms. Turner at Jupiter Elementary led her first learning unit “Little School of Horrors” with creative participation of art integration and scripts for the musical theater enthusiasts.  It was so delightful to watch the youth actively planning and staying on after choir dismissal to get it just right offering prop suggestions and making sure all youth were included. Ms. Turner is a pro at music composition, lyrics, and inclusion. She has delighted us with her puppetry featured here.

Mrs. Price at Renaissance Charter School @WPB is conducting a hybrid class with the use of the new “Owl Intelligence System.” The Owl automatically shifts the camera to focus on whoever is speaking. This allows the teacher to provide instruction online and in the classroom, both at the same time. The students here and at home are working on rhythm with the use of drums, finger cymbals, and body percussion.

Ms. Seewaldt de Langhoff conducts a virtual choir at North Grade Elementary. Youth are connecting for a “Live” virtual learning module called “Holidays Around the World.” Songs include “They’re Celebrating Next Door,” “Oshogatsu”- a Japanese New Year’s song, and “La pinata”- a Spanish song celebrating the traditions of Mexico.

Ms. Braunstein at Egret Lake Elementary developed an “in-person” 6-week learning unit called “Magical Mallets.” This terrific group of 3rd-5th graders worked on a 3-part ostinato which was composed by Ms. Braunstein.

Ms. Braunstein has also been busy with her virtual singers at Egret Lake Elementary - They created a Beatles tribute video called "With a Little Help From My Friends" which combined both singing and art. Ms. Braunstein's son, who is a teacher in NYC, edited her video!

At Berkshire Elementary, Ms. Cabrera utilizes fun emoji images and learning rooms to engage her virtual learners. Her first unit was called "America Is" and it was a patriotic hit. She is currently working on a learning unit called “Winter Wonderland.” Her latest learning module begins at 7 am two days a week (before school even opens) virtually teaching music education using recorders.  Her youth are excited about their growth in music and two have decided to continue their music education at Young Singers of the Palm Beaches! The children’s successes are celebrated by all. Ms. Cabrera is a champion in the virtual field inspiring youth in 2020. We are proud to announce Ms. Cabrera has been nominated as a Dwyer Award nominee for Berkshire Elementary in 2020-2021.

Ms. Braunstein at Egret Lake Elementary shows here how she teaches a “hybrid” class from her music cart with two computers, a headset and a keyboard. Ms. Braunstein’s in person group is outside the classroom on the portico with happy youth socially distanced, wearing masks, enjoying the gift of music.
Ms. Seewaldt de Langhoff is singing with her students in two languages... English and Spanish. The singers of Kid's Corner prepared a virtual Christmas concert including a traditional Spanish festive song, "El Burrito Sabanero," which is sung in the homes of many Hispanic families.

Ms. Raimondi has kept music happening, leading the youth of Pine Grove Elementary with an in-person class. Sometimes they met outside and sometimes inside socially distanced. On the day we visited this lively choir, the youth were working on percussion with buckets and rhythm sticks to “High Hopes” and “Old Town Road.”

The youth of Achievement Centers for Children and Families Village Academy under the direction of Mrs. Williams Francis have enjoyed learning about “Motivational Movies and Musicals." Their theme led them in discussions on perseverance in difficult times. Music selections included “Into the Unknown” and “Try Everything.”
