Young Singers’ 3rd Annual 5K brings in family from out-of-state, and a 5-foot griddle from the Boy Scouts!
Who wouldn’t want to take a run or walk through the beautiful Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach and enjoy free pancakes when they’re done?! Young Singers of the Palm Beaches 3rd annual 5K will feature Boy Scout Troop 141 manning a five-foot griddle, serving up pancakes to re-fuel runners and walkers. The public is invited to participate.
The 5K is named after and in memory of Mary Murray, and her children and grandchildren from Palm Beach county; Dallas and Waskom, Texas; Monroe, Louisiana; South Bend, Indiana; and New York, New York, will all be there to honor her memory… along with about 350 local friends and family.
This year’s 5K event will feature, in addition to pancakes, pre-run snacks, a flag ceremony by the Boy Scouts, a pre-race warm-up by Jazzercise, a live emcee and live entertainment including the talents of some of the Young Singers, a raffle, and a medal awards ceremony. All who sign up to race will receive a free t-shirt and goody bag.
Young Singers of the Palm Beaches annual 5K event benefits the Mary Murray Scholarship Fund, which was created to assist children who have an interest in singing and a desire to train and perform with Young Singers of the Palm Beaches but are unable to financially do so. Mary Murray’s family formed the fund to honor her memory by helping others, something Mary did on a daily basis.
Melanee Blankstein, Mary Murray’s daughter and managing director at Young Singers explains, “When my mother was taken unexpectedly it brought such sadness to our family. To celebrate her love for music and children we felt that we could create joy by bringing families together for exercise and fun. In addition we are able to raise scholarship dollars to support singers that could not afford to pay tuition. It is a pay it forward for everyone involved.”
Mary Murray’s connection to Young Singers began over ten years ago, when her grandsons, Drew and Tyler, became members of the choir. Murray’s attachment grew when her daughter, Melanee Blankstein, began working for the non-profit organization eight years ago.
The 5K planning committee would like to extend extra thanks to this year’s sponsors: Gunn’s Quality Glass & Mirror, Kelly’s Angels Elder Care, Legends 100.3FM Radio, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office, Lesser Lesser Landy & Smith Attorneys at Law, Brian Hanley, and Ameriprise Financial, as well as Boy Scout Troop 141.
Young Singers’ 5K welcomes runners and walkers of all ages; the public is invited to register and attend on February 6, 2016. The Walk/Run will be at Okeeheelee Park, off of Forest Hill Boulevard in West Palm Beach. Online registration is now open at www.yspb.org/5K; a family registration discount is available.
